I debated over it in my mind, wanting to help the guy out but didn't in the end. Anyway, he's been on my mind this week and I just googled him to see what he's up to only to learn that he died suddenly aged 59 a few months ago. I'm a bit stunned right now. We only worked together for a year, but it was just the two of us for the last couple quiet hours of a night shift so we had some good times just talking about music and shooting the ####. Damn. RIP Derek, he was a good guy.

It's not even the first time this kind of thing has occurred for me. Twice I've learned years after the fact that people I knew (another guy I worked with and a girl from university) died in their early thirties. It's a really odd feeling learning that people who pop into your head now and then (so acquaintances, not family/friends whose deaths you would know about in real time) actually stopped living months or years ago.
I sometimes Google old co-workers at times to see if anything has happened to them. Most interesting was a real jerk who got fired, found out like two years later he tried robbing a bank and got arrested. I imagine he went to jail.
