The new thing to do nowadays to get full on retention to grab a top end player on very low salary is getting a third party team to also retain 50% after the original team retains 50%. Generally a 3rd/4th/5th round pick would be give as compensation.

That compensation is generally only given for lesser amounts at the trade deadline.
If it’s a full season, compensation will be greater.
