I would say average at best is pretty fair, he also had some bad luck.
His UFA signings were brutal.
His coaching choices were largely awful.
He clearly didnt understand that if you squeeze players constantly but then splurge on losers its going to leave you with a bad reputation and in a poor spot when the player gets control of their own future.
The 'luck' part is man oh man...he could not get a goalie. Every goalie he went out and got rapidly turned into a pumpkin.
What upsets me is that he signed a bunch of ageing players to big, long contracts and then peaced out.
