The problem is that the rest of the team is overpaid for how much the supporting cast actually delivers. Whether it's a premium to be paid because of the City of Edmonton, or an overpay because McDavid inflates everyone else's numbers.
Those terrible other contracts are the ones that prevent the team from winning a cup. Scoring has never been their problem. Forwards and defensemen who can keep pucks out of their own net is their biggest issue.

Yeah, I think any team in the league would take Leon and McDavid at their cap hits and then build a team around that. That's never been the Oilers problem, they are gifts in the hockey building world.
It's everything they've failed to do around them from day one that has led to the lack of success around a generational talent. Generational talent scores a million points but doesn't do much defensively? Build a ****ing defensive team and structure around him. Pay the price for a proven, high level starting goalie.
Build from the net out when they drafted him and they'd be smelling like roses. But nope, had to go all 80's Oilers and keep adding offensive player after offensive player because they were excited fan boys instead of practical managers.
