there are certainly reasons but does it not fall on the GM? again he can't have ZERO responsibilty.

Like if the Leafs fail does he get a pass because most of the roster is someone else's? And they have many cooks in the kitchen too...probably more
I think he signed Tkachuk for 3 years for cap flexibility to be honest, not necessarily just Frolik.

And then IMO he used that cap (and the Brodie/Hamonic expiry cap room) for pieces like Markstrom and Tanev.

And I still think that even if he signed Tkachuk for 6 years (which based on other RFAs that year was the more likely longer term deal), I think Tkachuk could have approached him last offseason and went "Trade me please" and maybe he has less value with 3 years left to UFA than he did on a 8 year sign and trade.

I still actually think the bridge for 3 years to have him remain an RFA at expiry while keeping the cap hit down was the right move. If Tkachuk wanted to stay in Calgary he'd be here for 8 more years and $10.5M now. He didn't and instead he was moved for other assets.

It's funny because there is one example of a trade where Dubas and Treliving negotiated directly...and that was Brodie+Jankowski for Kadri + Brown...and IMO if that trade happens then Treliving would have easily won that deal with Dubas.

And in the end right now I have to say I'm pretty happy with Conroy as our GM. Who knows how it will go but his personality is infectious and the mood around the team is the best it's been in a long time IMO.
