I don’t think he was allowed to trade Gaudreau the summer before his contract was up. Reports say Edwards wanted him to keep and sign Gaudreau. Treliving may be faulted for not being forceful enough about the risk of Gaudreau walking.
He made a huge offer to Gaudreau to keep him, and Gaudreau walked anyway at the last minute. Conroy gives the impression that the whole organization was shocked when that happened.
I don’t think Tkachuk ever planned on staying in Calgary long-term. And Treliving got the best deal available for him given his marching orders to remain a playoff team.
