It's pretty obvious that the future success in the NHL, with parity and new draft rules, doesn't necessarily involve either of those extremes. Solid asset management is the key now. Make good trades, sign key guys, etc..

The teams that have purposely tanked for many years in a row all look awful. The teams that are retooling and making smart moves are succeeding.

Conroy will define himself, as GM early, based on how he handles this class of upcoming UFAs. Does he re-sign the key guys? Trade the ones who are leaving anyways? Deal the ones who aren't part of the long term picture? He doesn't need to sell everyone off to succeed.
