Try being a visible minority in rural AB (I have and it's zero fun having people tell your mom you can't possibly be her kid). Or First Nations. Or gay. The experience is quite different.
And community volunteerism is great, but also inconsistent and unreliable. You can't rely on a fundraiser when you are out of work, or sick.
