Jamie and his mum being very 'close'—wrapping her legs around him, them cuddling as they did—is very obviously
supposed to be weird. What octothorp said about them having a shared trauma living in a household with James Tartt was probably what the writers were going for with this. That said, what makes this all seem
more weird is the real-life age differences of the actors:
Phil Dunster (Jamie) is 31; Jamie is supposed to be ~26.
Brett Goldstein (Roy) is 42; Roy is supposed to be ~40.
Leanne Best (Jamie's mum) is 43; Jamie's mum is... probably supposed to be 45ish?
