Things that are just platitudes and opinions, like; "I love it here. This is where I want to be.", can often be dismissed because you don't ever really know what people are thinking, but Tkachuk stated some pretty specific details in the negotiations. I am inclined to take those statements at face value.

Tkachuk also seems a guy with a pretty big ego, who might not want to admit his own fault. If he always intended to move, he seems like the type of person who would blame it other parties as he doesn't want to compromise his own self-image as the "team guy".
Given Tkachuk's trade list, it seemed like he had very particular places with very specific local politics in mind. He either wanted to go to his hometown, the most recent cup winner, or more libertarian states. None of those places are Canada.
Anyways, this is all speculation. As others have stated, we have no idea what actually happened or what Tkachuk was actually thinking.
