8th place teams do have drastically worse records than say, division winners. Florida had a way worse RS record than any of the three teams they just beat in the playoffs.

Playoff success is EXTREMELY dependent on goaltending, luck, avoiding injuries (part of luck), and getting on a roll. Every team that makes the playoffs is capable of those things happening to them.

Agreed. But it's not a formula that teams should count on. Flames have counted on it for 33 years and have just one run to the finals to show for it.
