Is This The Proper Call?
Huge debate on the junior boards over this penalty shot call in overtime last night.
Also what would your call be from the angle the referee would have had?
My thoughts posted in white below:
Chris Culligan lost stride with his left foot when he went to shoot the puck, causing him to fall. However as he fell the Val d'Or defenseman gave him a two handed slash (not vicious McLennan-esque but a slash none-the-less) across the chest. That's when the referee's arm went up.
Now did that warrant a penalty shot? Maybe/maybe not, I didn't really thinkso at the time, but earlier in the game a clear penalty shot was simply given 2 minutes for tripping so a makeup call perhaps? Is OT the time to be giving makeups?
As for the angle the referee had I think that he made a decent call, he was slightly behind play, could have looked like the slash was a determining factor in Culligan's break(away/out) miss so the penalty call was justified IMO, and penalty shot could have gone either way.
But I wanted some other's opinions if I could.
Cheers
