If you are looking for an immediate roster player back, then you make the trade before the season. If you want futures, wait until the trade deadline when his cap hit is lower and contenders start to overpay for rentals.

Of course, waiting to the deadline isn't only a risk to injury, but you risk a situation where you are in the playoffs and trading him tanks the season, or you need to keep him. Like what happened with Gaudreau, which is why they should have traded him before the season started when he said he wouldn't negotiate until the end of the season. Teams like the Flames can't take that risk, and fortunately, it sounds like Conroy agrees.
