If you are looking for an immediate roster player back, then you make the trade before the season. If you want futures, wait until the trade deadline when his cap hit is lower and contenders start to overpay for rentals.
Of course, waiting to the deadline isn't only a risk to injury, but you risk a situation where you are in the playoffs and trading him tanks the season, or you need to keep him.
