Shopped in this range a couple years ago. Crosstrek felt a little bare bones compared to other options. Seltos was quite impressive as far as options and safety features. We were really close to getting a CX 30 but the back seat was just a bit small for the not quite out of the nest kids. If it was just the wife and I it would have won out, much like you mentioned I was just going to use a rooftop box for storage if needed. We ended up with a CX 5 which is just up from your range on price/size. We like the finish and comfort level of the Mazda over the Kia/Subaru. The infotainment can be polarizing as they don't do touch screens. I've had the Nissan as a rental and it was not for me, but obviously a rental won't have the trim level.
