This is my take on it.
I'm not sure Shanahan wanted Dubas back...I think the MLSE board wanted him back and not Shanahan. There were rumors Shanahan and Dubas didn't see eye to eye on personnel decisions always, and that would be confirmed by Dubas ask for autonomy.
So then the public comments by Dubas about his family, and the high ask for salary and other perks opened up the window for Shanahan to make this move to oust Dubas.
Now that is all just pure random speculation in my head...but that's kind of what it feels like to me.
