But I think the argument that the Flames should never trade a first round pick is shortsighted (acknowledging you didn’t say this but it was stated earlier). Young talent is young talent. Doesn’t matter how you acquire it. Whether it’s a first round pick, seventh round pick, college/European FA, or trade, doesn’t matter. I don’t think hoarding draft picks is a sure fire road to success and I don’t think Edwards sees it that way as well.

I'm not even saying hoard them, I'm just advocating for using the ones we've got.
In my view, firsts should only be on the table if you're a contending team with an open window for a championship (i.e top 4 in the conference), or a young up-and-coming team on the cusp. The first should also only be on the table if said window is wider than 1 year.
Spending firsts for this group, with an old core and several pending UFAs, would be reckless asset management.
