We've had denser smoke, but don't think I recall it being so strong smelling before - even when it was the Canmore/Banff fires next door. Are they growing Hickory or Mesquite up there by Edson???

Up in the northwest part of the province, there used to be a pretty heavy moss and undergrowth presence. I'm guessing that it has dried out the last couple of years and that stuff dry produces a tonne of dense smoke.
This is the same problem that Wood Buffalo and Yukon have put everyone on alert for in the last couple of years. Permafrost is melting, and leaving a cake of dry moss behind.
