Sigh. There's no STATE tax. You are still getting dinged on federal income/payroll taxes.

I've been told total tax burden is a more reasonable measure for high earners to consider. Tennessee (6.22%), Florida (6.33%), Missouri (7.11%), Michigan (7.4%), North Carolina (7.6%), Arizona (7.62%), Nevada (7.69%), Pennsylvania (7.95%), Virginia (8.23%), Washinton (8.24%), Massachusetts (8.48%), Ohio (8.65%), California (8.89%), Minnesota (9.41%), Maryland (9.44%), New Jersey (9.76%), and New York ($12.47%) are the NHL states of consequence. The top 1% are usually paying slightly below the state tax burden for where they live. The advantage isn't as big as some will claim it to be unless you think New York is the norm.
