Hint - getting rid of Frolik doesn’t buy you some sort of long term Tkachuk deal at say $9M.
Go listen to the press conference again. Tkachuk said himself that long term was the preferred option. "Wanting to be here as long as possible. We thought that was going to be the way to get it done." Then they talk about the bridge allowed no one to be moved. Tkachuk said this was brought up to him and he never even thought about it so clearly this was Trelivings idea. Then Treliving even says Matthew wants to be here, he wants to play his whole career here. He says the long term wasn't because Matthew didn't want it because they spent a lot time discussing long term but ultimately they wanted to keep the group together and this allowed it. The 3 year deal bit them in the ass hard. Having Gaudreau and Tkachuk as free agents in the same year also a big mistake.
