When it comes to tiebreakers I guess I just like simplicity, and H2H is as simple as it gets.

I see your logic for sure and I wouldn't hate head to head as a tie break either, it could work, but I think the whole premise in the EPL is not to rely on playoffs or recency to determine who gets crowned/is considered the best in a calendar year over every game and so I do like GD too as a measure of season long performance without being too complex.
I think even if one team crushes a bottom feeding team 9-0 at home, both teams get that same fixture so for me it does reflect total performance over every minute of the 9-10 months.
