Reason for the Flames:
They want to get skill and Marner is an elite 2 way winger who is a right shot and is an elite playmaker. Ideally he and Huberdeau each drive a line but perhaps they become a dealt combo? Maloney has said he wants more skill and scoring. Gio was a throw in to finish his career in Calgary playing out the last year of his deal on the bottom pair. He doesn’t have to be in the deal. Murray is there for cap and has 1 year left on his deal. Flames decide to roll with Vladar/Wolf combo and likely bury/buyout Murray. Marner has 2 years left on his deal.
Reason for Leafs:
They turn an expensive top line winger into a top 3D and a versatile C/RW who provides the same defensive upside as Marner and has also scored 40 goals recently. Lindholm could be a long term 2nd line C as Tavares ages and who knows what happens with Matthews. The Leafs also take a calculated risk that Markstrom had an off year like many of the Flames and will bounce back. If Markstrom does bounce back the Leafs will have finally solidified the net. Hanifin would be the Leafs 1st or 2nd best Dman depending on what you think of Reilly these days. Moving the Marner money lines up the Leafs to keep Lindholm, Nylander, and Matthews. If Matthews wants out they can roll Lindholm-Tavares and still be competitive.

That would be right up there with Gilmour for Leeman IMO.
The team needs cheap young skilled players to complement its expensive old guys and mid priced 25-30 year olds. The financial aspects of this roster are terrible. New GM has to fix that and create a talent pipeline. The upcoming UFAs represents an opportunity to do that as early as this draft. You’d be trading the two best ones for Marner. Yuck!
Huby, Marky and Kadri have to accept roles as vets on a rebuild.
