It works...when you also get elite goaltending. But the margins are slim with his system.
In 03-04 that team was nothing without Kipper. They were outside of the playoffs before the trade for Kipper and then he put up .933 in the regular season and .928 in the playoffs.
11-12 was somewhat similar in that Quick went into god mode and put up a .946 save percentage. Some of that was Sutter's structure - but Quick carried that team all season.
13-14 is the best example of it being more his system. Quick was good but not amazing with a .911 and they still won the cup in convincing fashion.
