1. Someone has to offer more than anybody else who is willing to keep the team local …
2. which also has to be less than any other owner in the league is willing to accept for their team.
3. Be someone the other NHL owners want to let into their club
4. Pay a big relocation fee - I’d venture at least $200M, but impossible to say.
5. Find a better arena situation (spoiler alert: not Houston)
#’s 2-5 make #1 incredibly unlikely.
It’s also important to remember that their are 4 owners here - nobody seems to know the exact breakdown. Presumably Murray has 50%+, but there is also speculation that it’s closer to equal (e.g 40/20/20/20). A sale doesn’t necessarily mean buying 100%. These sales often seem to happen in stages, where it take me a few years before the previous majority owner is out entirely (if they ever are).
