the problem is that even if you banned all guns tomorrow, you still couldn't prevent mass shootings being a huge problem over the next couple of decades ... simply because too many ticking timebombs have already been able to stock up. But not doing anything at all completely ####s this country for generations to come, and I don't see a way out of this for the US at this point. The general feeling in the population towards guns would have to change first, I guess. But that's not going to happen any time soon.
Fully expect those stories where people just randomly get shot at to become more frequent too. You have a part of the population that is a) indoctrinated by Fox News and other outlets that tell them that the world around them is dangerous and everybody is coming for their freedom, and b) is armed to the teeth because gun control remains a fantasy because of a number of reasons. Not a good combination.
