John has Bean (been) with CSEC for over 13 years. He was named COO of it in 2013, President in 2018, and CEO in 2019. He is responsible for the operations of the Flames, Stampeders, Roughnecks, Wranglers, and Hitmen. He dealt with the flood restoration and is a governor or alternate governor on the teams above.
Bean runs the business side of CSEC. He isn't running a hockey team, in terms of the players. He has a say in the hockey team, but there are (were) a President of Hockey Operations, GM, AGMs, head coaches, assistant coaches, scouts, video analysts, trainers, equipment managers, etc. who deal with that side. Bean doesn't run the power play, although sometimes it looks like an accountant is telling the players what to do. There is a difference between President of the company and President of Hockey Operations. Bean is the highest ranking person in the company.
The Washington Capitals President is Dick Patrick. He was (is?) a lawyer and developed commercial real estate. He held the title of COO before being named President, and is in charge of the Capitals, Wizards, and Mystic, as well as Capital One Arena.
The Capitals team is just one example and there are others out there. Jake Reynolds, a former Chief Revenue Officer with a degree in Business Management, is the President of the New Jersey Devils. Kevin Acklin is the President of Business Operations for the Penguins. He has an undergradutate degree from Harvard and a law degree from Georgetown. He was was the general counsel for the Penguins before being promoted. The Ducks' President is Aaron Teats, who started as a radio broadcaster, moved to the business side, spent time as the Chief Marketing Officer, and led the ticket sales.
If you have a problem with the Flames "bringing out an accountant" (which is not at all what they are doing) then you probably have a problem with the Capitals and Penguins "bringing out a lawyer" and the Ducks bringing out a ticket scalper. Many Presidents of companies started out as accountants. Do you ask why they are having an accountant as the head of their companies too?
