I think the bolded is why you can't read too much into his tone.
This is not what he's good at, and he was everything to combative to awkwardly jokey/trying to drum up excitement.
I wouldn't fault him too hard on anything or trying to peel back too many layers of the onion here. His inexperience with the format showed a lot.
