But I think we all have Sutter blinders on. He's such a presence and the rumors of power struggles are running rampant.

I really liked Treliving and If I had a choice I would have liked to keep him. But when you really look at it, it was time for him to move on. His era was the Gaudreau, Monahan, Lindholm, Tkachuk and Gio era. He did his best to position that core to win. But he floundered too many times with poor goaltending and sub par coaching hires.

The beginning of the end for him was probably Tkachuk and Gaudreau leaving. He threw a hail mary with a great trade and UFA signing to try and keep winning when you have a coach with Sutters' track record. But after probably the most frustrating season in recent memory, it really was time for him to go.

If I were to point to one thing that was Treliving's undoing throughout his tenure. It was Goaltending. Full stop. There were a number of versions of this team over the past 9 years that were absolutely good enough to win a round or 2 that were ultimately undone by bad goaltending.

I don't hate Maloney at all at PoHo. Its boring as hell, but he has a ton of experience and I think ultimately would probably be good at the role.

Its right in the title of the thread, he is the PoHo and "interim GM" he won't be taking both roles. There will absolutely be a search for a new GM. To me the obvious choice is Conroy.

The issue is with Sutter. With a new contract for him just starting, I don't think a firing is what will decide his fate, its the direction of the team. If its rebuild time, he's gone. If its keep trying to win time, he stays.

Color me concerned about the future of our pending UFAs

INteresting times around here.
I'd have a lot less issue with this today if it was announced that both Treliving and Sutter were moving on, instead of just Treliving.

The way it stands it really feels like Sutter won the power struggle, which giving him the extension before Treliving never made sense and IMO contributed to the issues this year.

In the end the issue I think that remains is that Edwards does not give his GM autonomy to do their job - and in the end I bet that is the reason Treliving didn't want to re-sign.
