So, why would the Flames be interested in Duehr? Well, Conroy remembers Duehr playing “hard” and “fast” which was especially notable for a player his size. It got to a point that whenever Powers would attend Minnesota State games to see Mackey, Conroy would always ask about Duehr.

“I thought if he could be a third line, energy guy that changes momentum in the game by being fast physical and on guys,” Conroy said. “He’s so strong on pucks. He’s good around the net. He has a great shot.

“Maybe the production wasn’t there, like some of the other college free agents,” Conroy added. “But we’ve had success with guys that compete super hard. Garnet Hathaway was another guy that we had (that did not have) the numbers, not the typical top college free agent where maybe everyone’s looking at this guy. But something that we feel fit what we were looking for in Calgary.”
