Seems to me he very clearly came in under direction to compete now and turn things around.
You're sighting one trade - which yes, was bad value - but go compare him to other GMs, evaluate his trades vs. other GMs. Tree has done quite well, and that trade was early in his career as a GM and it was a bidding war between Calgary and I believe Toronto at the time - look at that Hamonic trade as a learning lesson Tree went through and is better for it. Do you want some other team to benefit from the lesson he learned? Or do you want that lesson to benefit us?
The impatience shown in free agency to me also tells a story of being directed to be a cap-team that competes for the playoffs every season.
