I've said something similar in the winter tires thread before, but I'll say it again - I think winter tires are a strange thing to skimp on. There is a meaningful difference in performance between bottom level winter tires and the good ones.

When it comes to spending a few hundred dollars more for a top-tier set - that can be used for 3-4 seasons - that can make the difference between crashing and not of your vehicle that's worth tens of thousands of dollars (not to mention the occupants, etc)... Just doesn't make sense to me.

Edit - that being said, like in Sliver's case, bad winters are better than nothing.
