I still suspect Florida became his destination after the first game they played down there following Bennett being traded. The enthusiasm with which he talked about Bennett's home and how Bennett raved about life there made it seem like he was sold on it then.
Who knows, maybe if the Flames had kept Bennett, or traded him to Winnipeg, they would still have Tkachuk too.
