The game did a better job of showing the evolution of their relationship from messenger carrying cargo to loving father-daughter. So when the moment came, the question of "are you going to sacrifice your daughter whom you love for a small chance at saving humanity?" was very poignant in the game. Less so in the show, so the ending kind of flopped.
Almost no one would sacrifice their child for any reason, and Joel absolutely adopted her as a daughter.
