can kill them, but I don't think the story linked is particularly a good representation of the normal outcome of cyclist - pedestrian collisions.
I actually think your perfectly mis-worded first sentence is better: "People getting hit by bikes kill them." Yeah, I would probably kill the damn cyclist too if he hit me.
