Look at Gaudreau. He played on a team friendly contract for 8 years. Treliving should have signed him for 8 and maybe he could have but 8 years on a team friendly deal should be long enough for a team to build around him.
Also, prospects like Coronato are much less likely to be top end players during their ELC. What's the worst that can happen, as a GM you are wrong and the kid is way better than expected and you wish you had the extra year on the ELC? I'm sure we all would love it, if he turns out to be that good that quickly.
