What are your rate or salary expectations?
What is the position paying?
Well there’s a range commensurate with experience
Based upon current industry, my experience, etc etc my range is XYZ
Oh. Well not sure about that.
Ok then tell me what we are working with and I’ll work with you to build the value proposition.

Mid CoVID - do you want a job? Is so we will pay you as an intermediate for the senior level work and expect high performance and you’ll take it.
Ok. I’ll take it. (For now)

Post Covid -
Company 1 - we are losing a lot of people to higher paying roles but we still offer low rates and get desperate people who will take the job and move on in 3-5 months for better work but that’s ok for us as it makes our budget look good despite the chaos the churn causes.

Company 2 - we recognize the industry and inflation plays a role and we want a solid experienced person for a long time. So we are willing to pay a little extra above market.
