And Tkachuk would have needed to want to sign a 8 year contract that offseason too, Treliving couldn't just force him to accept an 8 year deal.
Look at the other RFAs that offseason:
Point: 3 x $6.75
Marner: 6 x $10.9M
Rantanen: 6 x $9.25M
Tkachuk: 3 x $7M
So based on the market that offseason the market for Tkachuk on a longer term deal would have been 6 years and likely between $9.25M and $10.9M.
Personally if I'm Treliving I would have taken the chance at a 3 x $7M instead of the 6 years between $9.25 to $10.9M too. Really if Tkachuk wanted to stay he could have taken 8 x $10.5M from the Flames then last offseason and it would have worked out to an average of $9.54M x 11 years.
If Tkachuk wanted to be here long term, he'd be here long term right now, he didn't want to and he left.

Sort of weird to think they Tkachuk would have gotten as much as Rantanen and Marner. He had not had the kind of year in year out success those two had had up to that point in his career. I guess they are the only ones who signed for more than 3 years could be the reason to use them as comparable?
