That's not really the point - the point is it's easy with hindsight to say "He should have just done 8 x $10M in 2019" but people wouldn't have made that point in 19-20 or 20-21, but sure I guess now after his 115 point season last year it's easy to use hindsight to say it. And Tkachuk would have needed to want to sign a 8 year contract that offseason too, Treliving couldn't just force him to accept an 8 year deal.

Look at the other RFAs that offseason:

Point: 3 x $6.75
Marner: 6 x $10.9M
Rantanen: 6 x $9.25M
Tkachuk: 3 x $7M

So based on the market that offseason the market for Tkachuk on a longer term deal would have been 6 years and likely between $9.25M and $10.9M.

Personally if I'm Treliving I would have taken the chance at a 3 x $7M instead of the 6 years between $9.25 to $10.9M too. Really if Tkachuk wanted to stay he could have taken 8 x $10.5M from the Flames then last offseason and it would have worked out to an average of $9.54M x 11 years.

If Tkachuk wanted to be here long term, he'd be here long term right now, he didn't want to and he left.
