Thanks again for all the advice. Turns out it was the switch, and also the "remote control receiver' components that run between the fan wires and the in ceiling wires. After replacing the switch, I got power to the ceiling wires, and then when I bypass the control receiver, the fan turns on an operates from the wall switch. Just have to replace the receiver I think, and I saw a replacement at home depot, so looks like I don't have to replace the fan itself.

Anybody can be a handyman thanks to CP!
