No conversation can be had about the merits of someone's work without discussing every horrible mistake they made as a person. I mean, it's pretty hilarious knowing we all have terrible secrets that we hope nobody ever finds out about.
Being married to Sharon Tate who was murdered in the Manson Murders, The Pianist, Knife in the Water, and living in France… basically in that order.

I get your point, but I think you might be projecting a little bit. I don’t think that most people consider the worst thing an artist had done/allegedly done when thinking of that person. Some do, and they usually bring it up, and I would say a lot of people know about those things usually, but the easiest way to bump that up the order is by bringing it up and reminding people which is why people who really only associate artists with the one thing do it. So, effectively, you’re just doing their job for them (it’s also why people who obsess about when an artist got “cancelled” are also funny, they’re basically doing the same legwork to ensure people are continuously reminded of the bad thing an artists (allegedly sometimes) did).

Every conversation is going to go that way if you contribute to it going that way. And I wouldn’t say we all have terrible secrets. We all have secrets of varying degrees that we’d probably prefer stay secret (usually just to avoid uncomfortable topics or embarrassment)… but now we know yours are especially terrible lol.

What were we talking about? Oh, right. Annie Hall is great and Woody Allen is a great director who somehow manages to also be a terrible director. Like Coppola and Malick, capable of making the finest movies you’re ever seen and the worst crap that has ever made it to film. Pretty incredible.
