You can never be too sure. They should never let the future of their team come down to the 11th hour. It's too much risk. Wrap up the extension months ahead or have a contingency plan

Or...and hear me out for a second...perhaps management should also consult and discuss everything with the spouse as part of the negotiation process. That's the real lesson here.
I'm blown away that this isn't the case already for major life altering decisions like signing an 8 year deal, but it seems like it isn't standard policy. Court the wife and she'll get the player to sign on the dotted line if he's on the fence.
