The game did this far better IMO. In the show the Fireflies know exactly why Ellie is immune, which suggests they can extract a cure and definitely paints Joel as a madman. In the game they have no idea why Ellie is immune, they just want to cut her up to hopefully find some kind of clue. Makes Joel seem a little less psychotic when he saves Ellie from a (probably) pointless death
