They want a good story - same reason Fraser was a lock. As you say, Blanchett has already won two Oscars, and if they can give Yeoh one and say "look, it's the first woman of colour to win since 2003, we even had Halle Berry give it to her" it's a thing for people to tweet about. Which isn't to suggest Yeoh's performance wasn't Oscar-worthy in its own right - it was just a fait accompli.
Anyway, I think what we can all take away from this evening is the amazing and powerful message that no one person is more important than profits.
