Look, everyone ####s on Feaster for that rumoured offer of three 1sts for MacKinnon, but the Avs already had Duchene and ROR in the Fold - they didn’t “need” MacKinnon persay.
Feaster’s mistake was not going far enough.
Imagine Feaster had offered 3 firsts, one of Gio/Brodie, and one of Backlund/Sven (coming of a 2 PPG season in Portland - he had hype).
Even if Colorado says “all of them”, getting MacKinnon to pair with Gaudreau probably still has them coming out ahead long-term.
Just thinking out loud, of course - I understand we likely don’t have the ammo in any event (though that’s all the more reason to trade Lindholm and Hanifin for sky high returns in a seller’s market).

Well, we don't know what we could offer. So far, it has never been done by anyone, so it's difficult to peg a value that could achieve it. I know this is a cop-out saying, but it's not like chel, we can't just add players to match a total value and acquire one of the picks. Not even lindholm 50% retained + Hanifin 50% retained + our 1st is likely worth it. Consider that the holder of a top 3 pick is likely not close to actively competing for the cup, even with the addition of a top 3 talent. So the value that we can give them is muted by the fact that the remainder of their team isn't composed of good enough pieces to use what we give them to compete. So, you turn to futures. Is Coronato+Flames 1st enough for a top 3 pick? What about Coronato+Flames 1st+ Pelletier? What if we add zary? Hard to say, no one has done this. But when you talk about adding prospects that are already performing within our system, what is our motivation to move on from those?
It's arcane. But historically speaking, you can pretty much count that the top 5 (really top 10) picks are untradeable outside of extreme circumstances.
HOWEVER, we have a piece right now that did secure a top 10 pick in a trade. Hotshot top goalie prospect with excellent pedigree and questionable path to NHL due to existing contracts. Schneider for 9th overall (Bo Horvat).
So maybe Wolf? I wouldn't trade him though.
