During the offseason teams won't really know where they stand in terms of playoff standings but they will with their cap space. You rarely see teams add 1 year players and give up decent draft picks. Unless they think they can extend them.
During next season, if we run it back and bounce back, we likely don't trade these expiring guys just because you wouldn't subtract if you're truly in the hunt. Which then we risk losing guys to free agency for nothing.
I think the value declines from here on out unless they have a good season in 23/24 before next TDL. The combination with guys getting older and the list of expiring contracts after next season has some pretty big names such as Matthews, Nylander, Aho, Reinhart just to name a few, may also not give us such a big return.
I truly think we missed out to capitalizing on returns with all those guys listed. Hopefully I'm wrong but time will tell.

Tree pretty much summed it up like this:
We saw what the crazy prices were at the TDL for UFA's. Best to save these mega bullets for the next TDL.
Lucky thing for CGY will be that all 6 pending UFAs will play for c9ntracts we will be the best in the West and lose some UFAs for noth8ng after a 1st round exit! This is the way.
