Assets are worth more at the TDL than at the draft when teams fall in love with picks. The scenarios I see are as follows:

1. This team rebounds with either Sutter or Tre out of the picture and then rides the F/As to free agency. At this point you will have to pay a bunch of old players to try and hang onto a closing window.

2. The same team sucks next year and you trade these players for a fraction as they are pure rentals. For years after we will hear the same Iggy chatter....if only they had sold Backlund, Lindholm, Hanifin, Tofoli a year earlier...

3. They can't extend anyone until after the draft...when teams are already filling their rosters with free agents.. At the draft they won't trade anyone for picks because "they are negotiating" and when they try to sell after free agency, only a small number of teams will have cap space...Ie. reduced values.

4. They actually sell at the draft (at least some players) for values lower than what they would have gotten today.

Worst of all..either Sutter/Maloney or Conroy is making all of these trades/signings...or a new guy who doesn't know the team and probably doesn't have a good feel for value yet.

Last years regular season was probably one of the best timeliness as a flames fan...this is probably one of the worst.
I think it will be number one. They will be a wildcard team at the deadline next year and won’t be able to trade any players. I think they will make the playoffs, though they could fade down the stretch. Assuming they make the playoffs they will put up a valiant fight but lose in 6 in the first round.
