The point is that if you are non-playoff team, if you are going to add cap, you might as well use it as a broker and try to get some future assets for it. Teams still had to be compliant at the deadline. Using on a trade for pending UFAs that are extremely unlikely to change the fortunes of the team, seems really pointless. The best case scenario is that maybe the Flames win an extra game between now and the end of the season because we added a couple of goals and a depth defenseman.
I also can't imagine the owners, who are already missing out on playoff revenue this season, are thrilled about having to cut bigger cheques for little to no material gain.
