16 out of 32 teams make the playoffs (and for a large portion of Treliving's tenure, more than half made it).
Treliving - for whatever reason - has not built a team that consistently makes the playoffs. He has not built an above average team.
I listened to the interview with David Poile on Sportsnet, and what he is doing makes sense to me. This is not verbatim, but he basically said: "We were in what I call the mushy middle. We can't get out of the 1st round, so we decided to take a couple of steps back so we can start moving forward again."
Nashville has a better win% than the Flames, more success over the same time-period with Calgary, and they are 1 point back with 3 games in hand.
I am not even stomping my feet for a firesale and complete rebuild. The least that should be done is make additional wiggle room on next season's cap right now, in order to try and take advantage of teams with no cap space, rather than be a team that gets taken advantage of. Flames are going to be tight against the cap next season as is. At least alleviate this, and get back some draft capital for a team that I consider a pretty good drafting team, rather than running a deficit on a team that isn't a playoff team.
