I know it’s more to do with Yzerman than this trade, but I do wonder if people would think he was as “brilliant” as they do if the Lightning hadn’t hit on Vasi with a late first, Kucherov in the 2nd, Point in the 3rd, and quality guys like Palat in the 7th. That’s just as much luck as it is talent evaluation. Their 1st round picks were mostly bad to average so without those later round steals a cup probably doesn’t happen.
Pretty lucky team. Which is why it’s a little more interesting to see his work now.
