But that player doesn't take the Canucks from dumpster fire, bottom of the NHL status to top 12 team. It makes them finish maybe 20th next year rather than 25th.
It's exactly like the JT Miller deal - 8m is perfectly fine for a big PPG winger who can win faceoffs and run your power play. He'd get that in UFA. But it's a terrible contract to have if you are in the position the Canucks are in.
They really have taken over the "laughing stock Canadian franchise" mantle from the Oilers (who of course inherited it from the Leafs).

But the point isn't to go from the bottom to the top in one trade, I'm sure they will be tinkering with this line up for the next year or so and then we will see where they are at, Vancouver's d suck's, they are trading for better dmen, makes a lot of sense.
