MAF was sort of an insta starter (as maybe expected from a 1OA), if you ignore his 20 games before going back to Jr (I have no idea how that worked), but wound up with a pretty bad rookie campaign in his first real pro year.

Vasilevsky split time as a backup in Tampa because Ben Bishop was lighting it up. Oettinger split with Khudobin in Dallas because Bishop got hurt. It is all a matter of circumstance and there is no right or wrong way to bring up goalies. The big thing is that these guys both got a shot after a decent, albeit brief stint in the AHL.
It's worth trying now given this team doesn't have a lot of options unless it is simply resigning itself to missing the playoffs this year. There are many reasons to believe in the player and his ability to be at least a mild upgrade given his track record and consistency as pro thus far.
